The first edition of the National Bioprocesses Symposium – SINAFERM (still under the acronym for National Fermentation Symposium) took place in São Paulo in 1964. After 1975, with the Brazilian Pro-álcool campaign, a large number of researchers began to work in the field, and as a result the symposium was established in 1977 and held biannually. In 1983, the Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Biomass Symposium – SHEB, was created in order to discuss sources and alternative processes for the production of biofuels. This event brought together the community interested in developing technologies associated with plant and microbial biomass.

The integration of these events occurred in 2013 with a joint organization of the symposia at the city of Foz do Iguaçu, PR. Hence, the SINAFER/SHEB has become the biggest bioprocesses event in the country. The following edition took place at Fortaleza, CE and proved the strength of bioprocesses research in the country.

Bioprocessing comprises of several steps involved in acquiring a product produced by a microorganism, a cell or an enzyme, from extraction or biosynthesis until obtaining a byproduct that is suitable for consumption. It is an area of inter- and multidisciplinary research mainly because the final product requires the integrated work of various professionals, such as from chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, pharmacy, biotechnology, chemical engineering, food engineering, materials engineering, among others.

The SINAFERM/SHEB brings these professionals with different backgrounds at various stages of bioprocesses. The same occurred with SHEB, although its focus was concentrated on the use of biomass.

The symposia provide the presentation and discussion of the latest advances in research carried out in universities, research institutes and companies. This promotes interactions between science, technology and innovation in bioprocesses area, offering different perspectives in addressing problems within the area and describing them in terms of scientific and technological competence. Therefore, the SINAFERM/SHEB contributes to the dissemination of scientific and technological advances in bioprocess in the country and the world, while stimulating the advancement of innovation in the strategic area of knowledge. The event encourages the emergence of new proposals and approaches to the advancement of biotechnology, promoting the exchange of ideas between institutions and companies, as well as fostering new collaborations between scientists, teachers, students and professionals. Also, it allows for the presentation of new equipment and supplies meant for scientific and industrial work by various companies operating in the area where the event is held.

For that reason, the Brazilian Association of Chemical Engineering and the organizing committee have the honor to invite you to participate in the XXI National Bioprocesses Symposium (SINAFERM) and XII Hydrolysis Enzymatic of Biomass Symposium (SHEB), which will be carried out jointly on September 3 to 6, 2017 at the University Tiradentes in Aracaju, SE – Brazil.
